A few weeks back, I wrote a blog called "The Challenge" which was designed to get you off your lazy rumpus and help you accomplish that special something you have been putting off!!! If you took the Challenge, how are you doing? Are things changing at all in your life for the better? If they are, good. That's what's supposed to happen. If they aren't, just remember the phrase "Rome wasn't built in a day." Pain breeds character. Stay on the path and watch the magic happen!!
Now onto the main topic of today's blog: Voting!! First things first!! I'M NOT TELLING YOU WHO TO VOTE FOR!!! This is not me stumping for either party. This is me telling you the importance of voting and why we should not take it for granted. A lot of you think voting only matters when there is a presidential election. But what about voting for your Congressman? They only represent your state and form laws and policies that will shape your life in the future!! How about voting for your city councilmen or women, judges, mayors, etc? They are the ones making decisions for the towns and cities that you live in. Don't you think that you should know what the heck is going on in your own backyard? What I'm going to do is give you an extreme example of the power of voting that, hopefully, you can relate to.
It's 4 A.M. Sunday Morning! You have just had the greatest club night ever!! You got 10 phone numbers, the hottest girl in the club kissed you on the dance floor, and you were able to maintain your buzz the entire night without getting drunk!!! You were the man (or woman)!! You want to celebrate this night with a cold shower because you were ON FIRE!!! But the water won't run!! Shower, sink and the toilet (in which you dropped an epic log) don't work! You say, "Ill sleep it off and take care of it later." Afternoon comes and you call the water company to see what's wrong!! They tell you,"Sorry, But during the last election, there was a referendum voted on and passed by the citizens of the town stating that between Sunday and Tuesday, every week, there will be no running water! It's their way of saving money as water prices were rising!! It only passed by one vote! Did you vote?" Then you hang up the phone and scream in frustration because that crap you left in the toilet is starting to stink up the house!
Now I know this is a ridiculous example. But it's designed to show you that, although you may not think so, your vote counts. Voting is the one thing in America that is equal. It doesn't matter how much money you have. One man/woman= One Vote!!! When you go to get your Drivers License, they also give you the option to register to vote, leaving you with no excuses!! For many of you, your grandparents (and great grandparents) died for the right to vote. Don't take it for granted or think that because you don't have a certain amount of money that you don't count. A lot of times, political parties take advantage of your reluctance to vote! Take back the power and VOTE!!
Now that you are ready to vote, I would advise you to do a little research on the candidates. I'm not telling you to write a 10 page paper on a candidate. All I'm saying is to check what their positions are on issues that appeal to you. If you like lower taxes and the candidate you like has a history of raising them, they may not be the one you want to vote for. Also, don't be afraid to question a candidate's character. Lets say you do a little research and you find out that your incumbent Congressman has a $50 a day coke habit and films himself break dancing in a Rodeo Clown outfit while "making it rain" with taxpayer dollars! (I know, I know!! He wouldn't be wearing a rodeo clown outfit! I crack myself up!) Again, ridiculous example. But, if you get a chance, google the name Marion Barry! Enough Said! All I'm saying is to do some research on the issues and character of the candidates and make you own decision. It doesn't necessarily have to be down a party line. Vote for who you think would perform the job the best.
I tried to keep this as short as I could because I didn't want to bore you with statistics and phrases that would rack your brain. But I think you get the gist of what this blog is about!! This fall, VOTE!!! AND DO IT THE RIGHT WAY!!!!
