Adversity: One Year Later....

I am writing this blog on June 12, 2012, which is the one year anniversary of my DUI.  Since that night, I haven't drank alcohol or smoke any kind of substance at all.  I've had a moment to sit back and think about what I have done.  Life has definitely been crazy.  I went back to school full time, regained my work ethic, dated a few of the most ridiculous females on the planet, made a whole bunch of new friends, fulfilled all of the requirements of my probation, and started this silly little blog.  I know what you are thinking right now. That was the longest run on sentence in the history of run on sentences!!! I know!! But it's my blog, dammit!!!
This blog is all about adversity.  Like I wrote in "The Shift" (shameless promotion of my first real blog! If you haven't read it yet, whadaya waiting for!?!), I have heard that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it.  We all have our own perceptions of difficult situations.  For some, it could be the break up of a long term relationship after finding your lover in bed with your neighbor and the family cat.  For others (as I dealt with during community service), it could be getting kicked out of your home and being forced to find shelter and something to eat.  Whatever it is, our response to adversity is what makes us who we are.
The easiest thing to do is to give up.  You can let all who ever doubted you win while you succumb to the demons that keep you in harm's way.  The toughest thing to do is fight.  It can be hard to keep fighting when the chips are down.  There will be days when you just want to quit and say, "Ive had enough." But life has a strange way of rewarding those who keep fighting with success.  You may not see it right away.  But if you keep your head high and refuse to quit, you'll see the change come over you.  Corny Slogan Alert! Here is something to remember: When the mountain seems to get tougher to climb, just say to yourself "One rock at a time!!" Yes, I made that up myself!! Yay!
You are probably saying to yourself, "Oh Wise Holder of a Checkered Shirt, Taped Glasses and a Pocket Protector.  What are some steps I can follow to help me get over MY adversity?"  Whelp, this is what works for me (this may not work for you. Remember, I'm studying to be an accountant, not a doctor so don't sue me!). 1.) Set a Goal and stick to it.  2.) Keep people around you who, when you start having a pity party, can make you laugh and keep you motivated during the rough times. 3.) Talk with people who are smarter than you. Their brilliance will rub off on you (except if you have sisters named Maya and Andrea!! Sheesh!) 4.) Read and exercise, not for the intellect and six pack abs, but to help you maintain your sanity when things get rough (plus, you will feel sexier when its time for the magic to happen. You'll pull that rabbit out the hat and....umm, yeah, you get the idea!!)  Finally, 5.) Find spirituality!! I'm not telling you to go Bible or Koran Thumping or all Mormon on these fools out here!! Just find something that will assist you on your search for yourself!!
If you are going through a rough time, good luck!! Inbox me and I may shout you a holla, dun!! Just keep the faith and keep grinding!!!
